30 minutes in the life: baking cupcakes
My daughter asked if she could make Easter egg cupcakes for her friends at school. She'd found a recipe and was inspired to create. I thought it was a great idea and asked her to write a list of friends she wanted to give the cupcakes. She looked at me blankly and replied " That's easy. The whole class". I admit, my initial reaction was "NO!". 32 cupcakes! Are you crazy? All of this was said in my mind and not out loud. I asked her to let me think about it as we had a busy week and I wasn't sure when we could actually bake. Yes, I was using the mum tactic of delaying in the hope she would forget about it and I wouldn't have to make a decision. Of course, she is well versed in my delaying tactic and remembered to ask again...and again. Then I realised, I was squashing her generous heart. She wanted to make something for her classmates and I was worried about the mess, cost, and time. And really, at the end of the day, I want her to be a generous and giving person. Sometimes, motherhood is knowing when to get out of the way and step aside to let their inner beauty shine. And so my reluctant yes turned into a geniune yes. She spent a rainy Sunday baking and creating. She followed the recipe and took 32 gorgeous cupcakes to school on Monday with a beautiful smile on her face.
