RIDING THE BIG WAVES

There is no such thing as work-life balance – it is all life. The balance has to be within you.

I was sitting at the desk in my office when my husband's mobile phone rang.

A flurry of calls follows it, and I know something has happened.

The pendulum of life has swung and knocked us off our feet as he walks into the living room and says, "Dad has passed away".

And all our plans for this week were quickly changed as we dealt with the loss and started to grieve.

Throughout this week, I have felt a deep craving for balance as life seems to be tipping from one side to another regularly.

It feels more like riding ocean waves in a storm than ripples on a calm lake, and it has done for a while.

I paused to inhale as I cancelled appointments and spontaneously took my girls out to breakfast as they lived through losing a grandparent for the first time.

I can be here with them whenever they need me, whenever I choose to pause the world, and maybe that is the balance this creative life offers.

Perhaps I'm looking at it from the wrong angle; I can't stop the waves or the size, but I can choose how I ride them.
